Cremation, the practice of reducing the body to its essential elements by burning, can be traced to the practices of ancient civilizations. Early Christians considered cremation to be a pagan practice and among the Jewish culture, traditional sepulcher entombment was preferred. With the Christianization of Western Civilization, earth burial completely replaced cremation except in rare circumstances.

Modern cremation began a little over a century ago with the development of a dependable cremation chamber in 1873 by a British scientist. The first crematory in the United States was built in Washington, Penna. in 1876 and a second crematory opened in Lancaster, Penna. in 1884. By the year 2000, nearly 1500 crematories were operating in the United States. In 1999 we became the first area funeral home to operate a crematory in Marinette and Menominee counties. We remain the leading cremation provider in our service area. Hansen-Onion-Martell is uniquely equipped to offer client families options ranging from basic cremation with no viewing, to full service funerals followed by cremation. There are many options and choices in planning a service with cremation.

The following schedule of cremation service options is offered to fully disclose the cost and range of service choices available. Should you have any questions, we are available to discuss them with you at any time.
